File Extension PST Contains personal information used by Microsoft Outlook and Exchange; includes e-mail folders, contacts, addresses, and other data; has a 2 GB limit and will cause Outlook to slow down when the file is close to the limit. Unlike the full version of Outlook, Outlook Express does not use File Extension PST; however, Outlook Express can import PST data using the program's Import feature.

One moore thing i want to share about pst file is that while using outlook application you may sometime have your pst file corrupted because of various reasons. So you should always be ready with backup of the file to avoid data loss situation.
There are third party pst repair software which could help you to repair corrupt pst file in all corruption scenarios.
